About American Improv
American Improv is Austria’s first English-language improv school, dedicated to bringing the transformative art of improvisational theater to Vienna and beyond. Since its founding in 2020, American Improv has built a vibrant and inclusive community, training over 250 students and earning more than 120 five-star reviews on Google. With a focus on Chicago-style, organic, and story-driven improvisation, our classes combine the thrill of comedy with skills that enhance confidence, creativity, and connection. Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned performer, American Improv offers a welcoming space to grow, learn, and play. We’re also proud to host masterclasses with some of the most renowned improv instructors from the U.S., including teachers at The Groundlings, UCB, and iO Theater, ensuring that our students receive a world-class education. Meet Our Instructors
Peter Graff, MA, PhD
Founder and Artistic Director
Peter began his improv journey in 2009 while living in the United States, training at renowned institutions such as ImprovBoston, ComedySportz, Endgames Improv, Made Up Theatre, BATS, and the Upright Citizens Brigade. Known for his organic, emotive, and relationship-driven style, Peter brings depth and authenticity to every scene. As a passionate teacher, he fosters a supportive and attentive environment, helping students discover the joy and transformative power of improv. Peter shares his expertise as an instructor at American Improv and Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU), inspiring students to embrace creativity, connection, and spontaneity.
Sophie Vater
Assistant Director
Sophie Vater is a certified social pedagogue with a talent for creating safe and supportive environments, both on and off the stage. With years of experience leading groups at holiday camps and internships in after-school care and disability support, Sophie has honed her skills in fostering trust and connection. Since 2009, she has worked with SOS Kinderdorf, guiding children aged 2-15 through everyday challenges, crisis management, and creative play. Sophie brings this same care and expertise to her improv work, using her background to craft spaces where participants feel free to take risks, embrace spontaneity, and thrive as a team.
About the American Improv Conservatory
The American Improv Conservatory is a nonprofit association showcasing some of Vienna's greatest improvisers including the top talent from American Improv’s students and alumni. Known for producing Vienna’s Only Weekly English Improv Comedy Show every Monday at Café Aera, they’ve brought smash hits like Not Harry Potter: The Unauthorized Improv Comedy Parody of the Wizarding World to life. Every performance is a unique blend of quick wit, creativity, and audience-inspired hilarity, cementing their place among the stars of Vienna’s comedy scene.
The Conservatory also shines in German-language performances as Wiener Kabarett-Theater at the Neue Tribüne, offering sharp, hilarious shows that bring the magic of improv to new audiences.
